The subject of each is a young girl and her dog. Hale describes the top one as a "sketch" though it is painted using vibrant oils that make the tiny flowers pop in the grassy background and the dog's fur glisten in contrast to the turquoise collar around its neck. COURTESY OF SONIA HALE The larger canvas below has essentially the same scene, but the flowers are muted, the dog collar is gone, and there is a softer look to the girl's face. But Hale isn't satisfied. "Mouths are the hardest," Hale says, "much harder than eyes." So she's back at the canvas, refining the colors, planes, shadows, and tiny nuances that will elevate a very good painting to that of a master work. Born in the Boston area, Hale took classes at the Museum of Fine Arts School as a young girl, where her talent for painting was soon recognized and encouraged. She attended Colby We l l e s l e y We s t o n M a g a z i n e | s u m m e r 2 0 1 3 College in Maine and double majored in English and art, all the while continuing to paint. After graduation, she worked in graphic design and art direction for magazines, often collaborating with photographers to design photo spreads. She describes this work as "joyful," but her true passion was painting. In her late twenties she began seeking out the country's leading painters, traveling to their studios and schools, including the New York Art Students' League and the Copley Society in 162 Sonia Hale at work in her studio
