The rain garden at Morses Pond was planted to help protect the pond from chemical pollutants. 1970s, the pond has shown signs of pollution due to phosphorus-rich stormwater from chemically fertilized lawns — resulting in recurrent algal blooms, murky water, and dense aquatic vegetation that impair recreational use and wildlife habitats. This 250-foot square, shallow depression is filled with Butterfly Milkweed, Bee Balm, and Switch Grass — native plants that nourish the soil, filter water, and attract birds and butterflies. Phosphorous pollution is also a major threat to the Charles River. According to the Charles River Watershed Association (CRWA), the river presently receives about twice the phosphorus it can safely absorb and still meet its designated uses. When it comes to water quality, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Both Weston and Wellesley offer residents information about sustainable lawn care. Go to Weston's Town Hall or website (www.tinyurl.com/ westonconservation) for a copy of "Stormwater Matters" and "Weston Stormwater By-law Frequently Asked Questions" or Wellesley's website (www.ci.wellesley.ma.us/pages/WellesleyMA_NRC/index) for "Healthy We l l e s l e y We s t o n M a g a z i n e | s u m m e r 2 0 1 3 Lawns and Landscapes," "Introduction to Organic Lawns and Yards," "Rain Garden Pocket Guide," and "Plants for Landscaping Ponds, Banks, Buffer Areas and Wet Areas While Encouraging Wildlife." Get educated for the benefit of your family and your community. As the environmentalist John E. Thorson states, "Water links us to our neighbor in a way more profound and complex than any other." 136 C O U RT E S Y O F W E L L E S L E Y N AT U R A L R E S O U R C E S C O M M I S S I O N Healthy Land, Water, and People
