Gardens in the Woods country road provides vista after vista. Tall trees give the gardens unprecedented height and canopy, and rock outcrops anchor the views. Your body isn't a do-ityourself project. Get maximum results in minimum time with your own personal training pro. Most of these featured gardeners have gardened elsewhere, from window boxes on Beacon Hill and a balcony in Houston, to a small yard in Belmont and acreage in England. They agree that Weston is blessed with a climate that's "perfect," with temperate weather and moderate precipitation so there is an endless wealth of plant material to use. Moss and lichens flourish, adding patina to rocks and trees. "Evolving" describes each of these gardens well, many having been tended by their current gardeners for more than 20 years. Their hard work, creativity, and resilience show. "When we moved here we inherited overgrown foundation plantings, back woods full of bittersweet and poison ivy, and huge brush piles covered with jewel weed," says one South Side gardener. The house needed a new septic system, and a flat area off to one side was the only location. "I hated to lose the little orchard that was there," she says, "but when the bucket loader came up again and again laden with rocks, I built a retaining wall for our first perennial bed." Pickaxe and sledgehammer come in handy in Weston.
