Type 1 Diabetes Update (CONTINUED FROM PAGE 106) the school staff has been terrific. The school nurse calls her with his blood sugar numbers, which he checks in her office three or four times a day. The food service staff have calculated the number of carbohydrates in the meals, so he can more precisely regulate his insulin. Like other diabetes veterans, he carries a catalog of carbs in his head: a half cup brown rice, 23 carbs; a half cup milk, 6; Cheerios, 18. You wouldn't know it from Gus's nonchalant attitude, but over the last four years he endured a frustrating and at times painful pursuit of a suitable diabetes pump. These small computerized gadgets enable doses to be administered with greater precision and convenience. They deliver insulin through a tube that is inserted under the skin. The site must be changed every three days to avoid the risk of infection and the formation of hard lumps that may interfere with insulin absorption. Gus's problem wasn't with the high-tech monitor, but with the low-tech way the tubing was inserted into his body. At one point, he was so stymied that he opted to go back on insulin injections.
