For soccer matches, Ashley checks her blood sugar before the game and again at half time. If she's feeling low, she always has that stash of juice. Describing the intense hunger pangs brought on by low blood sugar, Kelley said she would "often wake up in the middle of the night and dash down to the pantry and just grab stuff out of there." Now, she added, "I know to keep snacks by my bed." Kelley admits that her sister is the more self-disciplined of the pair. "Sometimes I get more caught up in things and forget to do a blood sugar test or a bolus [to compensate for a meal] and pay the consequences later when I'm feeling sick or dizzy," she says. "It's like a continuous buzzing in my head," she said. "I've often said to my friends, 'I'm sorry, I can't listen to you now. I'm low. It feels like you're tweetering birds.'" "Kelley's diabetes is much more brittle than Ashley's," her mother says. "She will have times when her numbers are super high, and she'll snap at a friend. But the difference is now she'll go back and say I'm sorry." 102
