be innovative, build a close partnership with our patients and their families in this process, and—even in the face of the many challenges—hopefully beat the odds." Richardson is driven to move beyond treatments that slow the progression of the disease to ultimately finding a functional cure. "In our center, the current therapeutic status quo is viewed as simply not good enough. We are very fortunate to have an extraordinary laboratory, led by my mentor Dr. Kenneth Anderson [also from Wellesley], and a very dynamic clinical research team, at the forefront of multiple new drug approvals." He adds, "Our group continuously strives to do better through cutting-edge bench to bedside research and collaboration with our pharmaceutical partners as well as with other centers, both here in the United States and overseas, and always with the goal of further improving patient outcome." While healing human disease, particularly cancer, often seems overwhelming, it's heartening that scientists immersed in the challenge, including Dr. Vasconcelles, offer optimism. "In the past twenty-five years I have seen huge strides in cancer treatment. Today, many patients live with this chronic disease instead of dying. I know my company cancer.
