"No matter who it is, I would say the most important thing is a healthy diet, managing stress, and lots of exercise," say Heidi Angle. "The beauty of diet and exercise is there are there are no risks and all pluses in terms of bone health, heart health, better mood, and better self-esteem." The artist from Weston realized that her hot flashes were much improved by exercise. "What is counterintuitive is that I would never get them when exercising," she says, "and when I finished, they stayed away for hours." Sharon Margulies sees menopause as a crossroads for women. In one direction can be bone loss, weight gain, and diminished energy and mood. In the other, there is the chance to stave off a downslide into early aging. "I almost see menopause as the last chance for women to get themselves into shape," she says. "At this crucial point, women really can have an impact on how they age." Exercise has always been seen as a cure-all, but for menopausal women, it has the potential to be transformative. Michele Shea, owner of the Fitness Club for Women in Wellesley, says that the symptoms of depression can be alleviated with exercise. The loss of bone density can also be mitigated with weight-bearing exercise. But our society loves an easier answer than the dreary, scolding mantra of better nutrition and more exercise. "It's time and work," admits Heidi Angle. But as women enter this new chapter, sometimes a gentle reminder to get back to basics comes just at the right time. "Remember, menopause is not a disease, it is not the end of your life," says Sharon Margulies, "it is just a new phase that need a little management." 134
